11) Cancer Fighting Supplements - Proteolytic Enzymes

There are multitudes of Cancer Fighting Supplements that may help with Prostate Cancer. Though it may be ‘illegal’ to say they Cure Cancer, there is significant evidence that they do play an important part in the release of this deadly disease. Some have said these Natural Supplements have not been fully studied simply because there is no money to be made. They can’t be patented. Others imply the medical field, in an effort to keep revenues up, want to keep the public addicted to, and dependent on, expensive drugs that under-perform and cause further damage. Personally I believe there is way too little research on Natural Supplements; and that most Physicians have tunnel vision when it comes to their medical specialties. In an ideal world, I would like to see a true team approach to Curing Cancer. Until this is presented it is up to each one of us to create our own team acting as the voice of reason between the various components.

The first area of Natural Supplements I want to explore falls into the category of Proteolytic Enzymes. The value of these for fighting Cancer was first proposed and researched by Dr John Beard between 1906 and 1911. So they have been around for a long time. There are today a number of clinics primarily using Proteolytic Enzymes for Cancer treatment, and there are even more medical professionals that recommend their use as an adjunct therapy along side standard orthodox cancer treatments. What are Proteolytic Enzymes? For our purposes, they are Digestive Enzymes called Bromelain, Papain, and Pancreatin that come from pineapple, papaya and hog pancreas. Another, and possibly the most powerful Proteolytic Enzyme we will discuss is Serratia Peptidase from the silkworm.

It is believed these Proteolytic Enzymes assist in increasing Cancer fighting antiproteases that block the invasiveness of tumor cells. They inhibit metastasis by clearing proteins around Cancer Cells allowing killer T-cells and the Natural Killer cells to identify and attack them easier, and they block the growth of new blood vessels to developing Cancer thereby depriving the Cancer of necessary nourishment needed to support Cancer cell growth. They also work to dissolve fibrin.  Fibrin tends to cloak Cancer cells and make them sticky creating a greater likelihood of metastases. When the fibrin is dissolved the Cancer cells are easier to detect and destroy by the body’s own defenses. Because of this process it has been shown that Proteolytic Enzymes increase the effectiveness of both the macrophages and the natural killer cells by up to 12 times. In addition they may also assist in the fight against viral infections as a result of chemo-induced immune suppression. Since all this can’t be said on the label at your local vitamin store, they are most commonly promoted as a product that relieves digestive problems, relieves aches and pains, supports the immune system, increases flexibility, improve circulation, eases sore throat pain, aids in weight loss, and supports joint and tendon health.

Proteolytic Enzymes are best taken with a full glass of water on an empty stomach at least 45 minutes before any meal and up to two hours after a meal. They should be Enteric-Coated to pass through the stomach where in the small intestine they dissolve because of PH change. There they become digestive enzymes to help us digest our food and convert proteins into free amino acids, which are easily absorbed by the cells of the intestinal wall. Important note: It is believed if too much processed and overcooked foods/meats are eaten too fast, the pancreas which naturally secretes our enzymes can become overburdened with the digestive enzyme demands. This then creates a situation allowing toxins into the body thereby stressing the immune system and providing an opportunity for Cancer. As the Supplemental Proteolytic Enzymes then enter the circulatory system they are called systemic enzymes. There are important precautions before taking Proteolytic Enzymes to consider. They are a known blood thinner. Individuals taking prescription blood thinners, having surgery in less than a few weeks, experiencing problems with ulcers or reflux disease, taking antibiotics, pregnant or lactating women, or those with a food allergy to pineapples or papayas should either not take or consult a physician before taking Proteolytic Enzymes.

The Proteolytic Enzymes I currently take are in a broad-spectrum formula called Wobenzym N. This company has been around for a very long time and is trusted in their quality. Suggested use on the label for Adults is 3 tablets twice daily. The label goes further to say dosage may be increased up to 12 tablets total per day spread over 4 doses. Those professionally treating Cancer with this product say because the amount of Proteolytic Enzymes in any over the counter product is low, they recommend taking from 40 tablets to as high as 90 tablets per day dosage. When taking high doses it is recommended doing so in stretches of around 25 days, then allowing some time off, 4-5 days, for the body to eliminate the waste product created. I am still in the experimental stage with my small dosage. As I do have a slight food allergy to pineapple, I am being careful and watching how my body responds to the Bromelain in the Wobenzym N. No doubt I will increase the dose as over time, and I may also look to other alternative products that drop or reduce the Bromelain.

There are many ways to increase Proteolytic Enzyme intake. Just eating red fruit Papaya, rich in Papain, and Lycopene has been shown to have dramatic positive affects on Cancer. In addition to the benefit from the Proteolytic Enzyme, the highly bio-available Lycopene in papaya accumulates in prostate tissue, and is localized in the nucleus of prostate epithelial cells. There it is believed to induce cancer cell death, anti-metastatic activity, and the up-regulation of protective enzymes. In one Prostate Cancer study in Australia is was found that men who consumed the most Lycopene-rich fruits and vegetables such as papaya were 82% less likely to have prostate cancer, and that when Lycopene-rich foods were consumed with green tea, the combination was even more effective. Organo-sulfur compounds called isothiocyanates are also found in papaya that have shown themselves capable of inhibiting both the formation and development of cancer cells.

Serratia Peptidase (Serratiopeptidase, Serrapeptase) is a Proteolytic Enzyme originally derived from the silkworm. In addition to its’ Cancer and Tumor preventative qualities, it breaks down "non living" matter in the human body, including cysts, arterial plaque, blood clots and scar tissue. It can reduce the levels of dead tissue in the circulatory system and dissolve fibrin build up in the cardiovascular system, organs and muscle tissue, promoting healthier blood flow and making Cancer cells readily detectable. In Japan and Europe it is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory for conditions including sinusitis, laryngitis, sore throat, ear infections, back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, carpel tunnel syndrome, migraine and tension headaches. It has also been used to reduce plaque buildup in the arteries. Studies show its anti-inflammatory effects are superior to other Proteolytic Enzymes. One of its’ greatest benefits is reduction of pain. Some physicians in Europe and Asia are even using it as a replacement for ibuprofen and other NSAIDs.

One additional note, I am still researching Proteolytic Enzymes and expect to have more information soon on a New Study that appears to question their use.

Recently a Scripps Team at Scripps Research Institute has completed some new research that indicates the cleavage of protein surrounding a Cancer Cell by Proteolytic Enzymes may actually protect cancer cells because the cleavage triggers a signaling cascade in the tumor cell that blocks apoptosis. They went further to say that the cleavage of CDCP1 by a serine protease enzyme is the key event that promotes tumor cell survival. Since the Serine Proteases, chymotrypsin and trypsin from the Pancreas and Supplements, are enzymes that cleave protein chains, I wonder if taking these in the form of Wobenzym N, or other Supplements, ‘may’ be creating further problems or if the particular enzyme they are discussing is different. My first thought is that Proteolytic Enzymes work to clear proteins around cancer cells making it easier for T-cells and the Natural Killer cells to identify and attack. Now I am concerned that taking Proteolytic Enzymes may cause Cancer Cells to be more virulent and more easily spread. This new Study appears in contradiction to the abundant good results documented by those treating Prostate Cancer with Proteolytic Enzyme Therapy. As it presents a new question, I am looking for a further clarification on the matter.

10) Prayer and Prostate Cancer

Before going into Cancer Fighting Supplements I’m taking for Prostate Cancer, this is a good time to talk about something I have been doing from the beginning of this journey. It’s called PRAYER. Does it work? Absolutely, without a doubt, the answer is, YES!

I think of myself more spiritual than a ‘religious’ person. ‘Religions’ and I often have difficulty getting along. I question the rules that seemingly make little sense. I’ve never been able to understand why so many Religions feel their ‘way’ is the ‘only way to salvation’. To me, there are so many paths, all leading to the same place. Baptized as a Catholic, by the time I was in college I was attending other churches trying to figure out where I fit. I traveled through the standard Christian churches for years, then looked at Buddhism and even the way of the Tao. Finally I ended up developing my own understanding of my relationship with God, which thankful to say is still a delightful work in process.

Today I believe that God is everywhere and in everything, from the vastness of the cosmos, to the blade of grass in our garden, to the tiniest of particles that make up the cells in our individual bodies. Since I believe that God is everywhere then simply put: God Is. Since God is everywhere, all-powerful, all present, and within everything, then I am also part of God, therefore: I Am. And since I Am so is everyone and everything on this planet. We are all connected to the divine source, God. How can there be any separation within the divine? Even the air that is between our individual bodies is filled with the same God essence that makes up the cells of our bodies, therefore, We Are. My personal belief is that there is only One Life past, present, future, seen and unseen; and that we and everything are all connected. I believe that One Life is the life of God manifest, and because that Life is God’s Life, it is Perfect, Whole, Complete, Abundant, Healthy, Joyful, filled with God’s Love and Life. Most importantly I believe that I am here to experience all Life has to offer, and as part of God I have the ability to choose to accept what form that will take.

Throughout this process I have come to understand that ‘Prayer’ in all its’ many forms can and does work Miracles. When we Pray, we connect with the God Self that is the soul of our being and the collective consciousness of God that makes up everything. It matters little the form of Prayer or if you are Christian, Jew, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu or any other member of a multitude of different Religions. What matters is that you do Pray, and the strength of your belief in your prayer. Prayer of course comes in so many forms. Within all those forms the most effective Prayer will have the common traits of: (1) Clearly ‘Stating’ what you Want and expect; (2) Knowing that what you want is already available and will manifest; (3) Seeing, Feeling, and Experiencing as best you can what you Want as already done; (4) Then releasing the Prayer knowing it is done while graciously Giving Abundant Thanks for the outcome. The final step is to Allow the Prayer to Happen, while still gently taking all the steps that present themselves after the Prayer to accomplish your purpose. This is called listening to Divine Guidance. How long should you Pray. The simple answer is: as long as it takes.

The Results of Prayer can be greatly enhanced with the help of others Praying with, or for you. Join a Prayer Circle, Songa, or Prayer Support Group. I cannot over emphasize the importance of this step. Having multiple people Pray for your health will enhance your ability to Release Your Prostate Cancer a thousand times over. You also will be Praying for their needs and requests as well. Remember there is no shortage to God’s good energy and love. My wife and I are members of two Prayer groups and I receive tremendous strength from the combined support.

Meditation is another wonderful way for individual Pray. You may put on some easy music. Then just relax your breathing and quiet your thoughts after a short Prayer. Allow yourself to Listen to what comes to you. Are there steps for you to take? Are there fears showing up for you to address? Just 20-30 minutes of meditation daily will provide a great recharge for your mind and body. I often to start my meditation with the following Prayer:

God Is

I Am

We Are

There is One Life

That Life is God’s Life

That Life is Perfect, Whole, Complete, Abundant, Healthy, Joyous

That Life is My Life Now

I know that every cell in my body is filled with God’s Life, God’s Love , God’s Good Energy

I know that my Prostate is filled God’s healing Love and Energy

I release any Cancer Cells from my Prostate, from my body.

I Know that every cell in my body is working in harmony with every other cell,

for a strong, vibrant, healthy body.

I release this to the universe knowing that it is done, right here, right now.

Thank you, Thank you God

One final note if you want to heal faster, whatever you do be sure to surround yourself with positive people who support you, seeing you as getting better and healthy. This is the same for any support groups you may attend or join. What we believe both consciously and subconsciously becomes our reality. More and more today people are finding this to be true. If you want a scientific reason, just take a look at the work done with quantum physics, string theory and quarks. The bottom line is this, if you surround yourself with those who are into negativity, drama, or feeling sorry for themselves, your life will reflect the same. If you gather those to you who are solution oriented, positive, and upbeat even in the face of adversity, your life will be better and you will heal faster.

9) More on Dairy and Prostate Cancer

There are an estimated 30-50 Million American ‘Adults’ (even more children) who are Lactose Intolerant in one form or another. Certain ethnic groups experience this intolerance in far higher numbers. For instance Asians and American Indians may experience Lactose Intolerance in up to 80-100 percent of their populations. The quality of life for those Lactose Intolerant is often diminished and yet they can’t quite put their finger why, so they just continue to suffer in silence. Symptoms of this intolerance, occurring immediately or to up to a few hours after eating, may include: skin rashes, chronic skin reactions, itchy nose and eyes, sneezing, runny nose, wheezing, breathlessness, coughing, nausea, cramping pains, bloating, vomiting and diarrhea. Doctors often misdiagnose Lactose Intolerance and true Dairy Allergies, or ignore it entirely, leaving their patients to wonder what is wrong with them.

Now let’s add those with Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerance to this discussion. This is believed to be an autoimmune disorder that attacks the small intestine when exposed to the Gluten most commonly found in Wheat, Rye and Barley. Symptoms of Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance often include: bloating, diarrhea, fatigue, osteoporosis, arthritis, vomiting, autoimmune disorders, neurological problems, osteoporosis and even Cancer. This can be a chronic condition that tends to flatten and damage the villi and microvilli in the small intestine causing ‘lack of absorption’ thereby robbing the body of essential nutrients. In simple words you can eat lots of food, vitamins and supplements yet still be starving yourself. Over time the damage may progress further to transferring poisons into your body through a Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Today Celiac Disease is on the rise. Since the 1950’s the number those suffering from it have grown by 500%. It is unknown why this is happening but there may be a link to the more extensive use of Glutens found throughout today’s processed and ‘fast foods’, or even that our immune systems aren’t used as much as in the past. It is estimated at least 3 Million People have Celiac Disease and that does not begin to count those that are Gluten Intolerant.

Celiacs with damaged villi are no longer capable of catching and breaking down the Lactose they receive through Dairy. As they consume more Dairy, they continue to damage their body even further. Celiacs may experience a high rate of Lactose Intolerance and problematic symptoms long after removing Gluten from their diet. There is a train of thought that once Gluten is removed from a Celiac’s diet, the villi may repair themselves in one to two years and Dairy digestion would again be possible. Though if you are dealing with Cancer, why would you even want to consider re-introducing Dairy. Rice Milk, Almond Milk, Non-GMO Soy Milk, and Hemp Milk provide excellent options for Dairy, and there are fabulous Vegan Protein Powders as a direct substitution for whey Dairy protein.

It is also important to consider the several Gluten Cross Reactive Foods that 'may' plague one with Celiac. In these cases the immune system reacts with these as if they were Gluten. Some of these include: alpha and beta-Casein, amaranth, buckwheat, casomorphin, cheese, chocolate, coffee, corn, hemp, milk, millet, oats, potato, quinoa, rice, sesame, sorghum, spelt, tapioca, and yeast. Many people have little reaction with these, but it is wise to be tested just to be sure. Remember your body is unique, as are your food allergies and sensitivities. Anything that improves to your immune system will enhance your ability to heal.

In addition to Lactose Intolerance it is estimated around 50% of those with Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance also have an Allergy or Intolerance to Casein, the protein found in Dairy. This allergy will often extend to all forms of Dairy including eggs, cheese, whey, yogurt, and other cow/goat milk products. (Please read the previous post: 8) Treatment Begins – Dairy, Meat, and Prostate Cancer) My life is a perfect example of this process. Removing Gluten from my diet made a major difference to my health but I was continuing to experience troubling symptoms. It was not until I was properly tested by BioTek Laboratories and found I had severe allergies to Dairy did I start to really feel better. (Please read the previous post: 4) Decision for the Prostate Biopsy and Food Allergy Relief)

After 60+ years on this planet, my belief is that much of the disease we experience today comes solely from our environment. What we put into our bodies, and what we surround ourselves with both physically and mentally makes all the difference. In retrospect I probably had Celiac for much of my life along with Dairy Allergies. I was starving my body of essential nutrition though I was eating abundantly every day. This in turn compromised my immune system allowing the Prostate Cancer to take hold. I grew up in a mildly poor to middle class household where milk, sugar cereal, white bread, meat, potatoes, overcooked vegetables and sugar filled desserts were the norm with little deviation. That diet continued for much of my life. I wish I knew then what I know today. I now have the personal belief that my Prostate Cancer is the direct result of past diet.

If you take away anything from this Blog, I urge you to consider what you put into your mouth. Learn to Read the Ingredient Label first before purchasing. If there is Dairy, or Chemicals in the product you can’t understand, RUN AWAY! If you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned here, Get Tested Immediately for food Allergies and Celiac Disease by professional services similar to BioTek Laboratories through a professional source like Bastyr. The longer you wait may only cause further damage to your body and shorten your life.

If you have Prostate Cancer now, immediately do something about it. Relying only on standard medical procedures may prolong your life for a short time without releasing the Prostate Cancer or removing the cause. Ask yourself this question now, “How do I ever expect to heal if I am continuing to put the same crappy food into my body that caused the problem?” Allergies not withstanding, if you are eating Dairy and Meat you are on a slippery slope. Think of yourself as in a race. The prize is Continued Life. Each day you improve your health with a proper diet will extend your life further. The choice is yours.

8) Treatment Begins – Dairy, Meat, and Prostate Cancer

Not more than once the question crossed my mind, why did I have Prostate Cancer? I was reasonably healthy, not to overweight, active, ate all the ‘correct’ foods like ‘milk and cheese’ for protein, building a healthy body and strong bones according to the ads.  Deep down, I knew that if I didn’t find out the ‘why’ regarding my Prostate Cancer, then treatment was doomed. After months of research, what I leaned was both SHOCKING and sad.

I learned if you really want Prostate Cancer then just continue eating lots of dairy (and animal products)! In fact the Casein and other chemicals found in cows milk may be some most dangerous chemical carcinogens of all foods. Worldwide there will be over 400,000 new cases of Prostate Cancer diagnosed annually. It’s one of the Most Common Malignancies among men and the focus of extensive study. Continually these studies have found a direct link between the consumption of milk/dairy products and the increase of Prostate Cancer. Up until the point of my recent test revealing a severe allergy to dairy (See: Blog #4) Decision for the Prostate Biopsy and Food Allergy Relief). I had been consuming large amounts of milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream, cottage cheese, and anything else dairy. Guess I was a ‘dairyholic’. I believed it was good for me because that’s all I heard on the ads, and from our general medical profession. The real truth about dairy changed my world. I hope it will change yours.

In one Harvard Study of male health professionals, men who drank two or more glasses of milk a day were almost twice as likely to develop advanced prostate cancer as those who didn't drink milk at all. In another report rising rates of dairy consumption in Japan were linked with rising death rates from prostate cancer. Per Ganmaa Davaasambuu a physician (Mongolia), a Ph.D. in environmental health (Japan), a fellow (Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study), and a working scientist (Harvard School of Public Health), "The milk we drink today is NOT nature's perfect food." She goes on to state the potential risk from cow’s milk is large, and heightens the risk of cancer. So what if you already have Prostate Cancer. Studies have indicated that simply changing your diet will make a real difference for your recovery. It has been shown that a low fat, high fiber (vegetarian) diet will significantly reduce the growth of prostate cancer, and there has been several links between the calcium in dairy and Prostate Cancer. Animal protein from meat has also shown a direct link to Prostate Cancer. In other words if you want to live longer, eat more vegetables and fruit. Eat less dairy and meat if you want to live long and be healthy without cancer.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell in “The China Study” details one of many links between cancer and consumption of animal protein, dairy and meat. He found that Casein, which is 85% of the protein in dairy, promoted cancer in all stages of its development. His conclusion: the only safe protein is plant-derived protein. In a further study Dr. Campbell found consuming more than 10% of protein in ones diet from Casein turned on cancer cells, while reducing the Casein to 5% turned them off.

Prostate Cancer is not the only reason to be concerned about dairy in your diet. In a World Health Organization 25-year study mortality from coronary heart disease was lowest in countries emphasizing diets of vegetables, fish, plant based oils, and legumes while countries with the highest heart disease emphasized diets of meat, milk, sugar, potatoes and eggs. The World Cancer Research Fund recommends a "predominantly plant-based diet" and lists fruits and vegetables as convincing, probable, and possible risk reducers for cancer. Also hip fractures worldwide were highest in countries consuming the largest amounts of dairy. So much for dairy building strong bones. In fact dairy works to turn the body acidic, actually causing calcium to be leached out of bones. The real question becomes how much longer are we willing to risk the quality of our lives?

Based on this research, and much more, I began my process to Release Prostate Cancer with a rather large change in diet. Knowing it not enough to just drop certain foods, I decided a complete change was in order. I chose to become Vegan (not in a fanatical way) and looked for ways to enhance my daily intake of nourishment. I began juicing with fresh vegetables and fruits and making my own vegetarian soup, along with increasing my intake of rawfresh fruits and vegetables. Another significant change was only buying Organic and Non-GMO. Why should I continue to ad something to my body laced with chemicals that would stress my immune system when nutritious quality organic food is still available? I also began taking several vital Supplements to support my Release of the Prostate Cancer. If you are wondering what a sample of my daily food intake looks like, just check for it on the above tab... Basic Cancer Diet.

The results so far have been marvelous. I’ve easily lost the excess 20 pounds I was carrying, and feel more energized and mentally alert. I have also released many of the aches and pains my body was experiencing. The better news is that my last PSA test was down to a 3.2. Definitely headed in the right direction.

7) Diagnosis and Beginning to Heal

We made an appointment with Dr. Zink to go over the Prostate Biopsy results and discuss Treatment. I entered the office fully expecting to hear the words Radical Prostatectomy, and was prepared with my research on da Vinci Surgery. Dr. Zink explained that the Biopsy had found prostate Cancer in three of the cores, the right apex, left apex and left mid at core amounts of 10%, 15%, and 5-10% respectively. The Prostate Cancer found had been rated with a Gleason Score of 3 and 3 for a total score of 6.

Gleason Scores for rating Prostate Cancer have been around for a reasonable time, since 1966 when Dr. Donald Gleason, a pathologist created a scoring system on information derived from studies of the biopsies from around 3,000 patients with Prostate Cancer. It now provides a standard of measurement as to the severity of the Prostate Cancer. From a patients standpoint, the lower the score the better. It is important to note that the process is a bit subjective and depends on how the cells look to each individual pathologist under the microscope. About 1.5% of the time an inaccurate diagnosis of Prostate Cancer is made where none really existed. Generally speaking a Gleason score of 5 or 6 are generally low grade tumors, a Gleason score of 7 is rated as intermediate and moderately aggressive, while a Gleason score of 8, 9, or 10 are high grade tumors, very aggressive and fast growing.

The location of the Prostate Cancer is also very important when considering removal of the Prostate for treatment. In my case a Radical Prostatectomy because of the Cancer’s location would most likely damage/remove the nerves leaving me without sexual function but still with adequate urinary function. This option, if required, is still preferable to me over radiation treatment because of its long-term results. Too many Prostate Cancer patients previously having radiation treatment find themselves without options 5 to 10 years down the road when they have a relapse.

During our chat I felt best when Dr Zink looked at me and said, “Your Prostate Cancer is low grade and slow growing. You will not die of Prostate Cancer, there are so many treatment options.” Of course he was talking of all the accepted medical options including hormone therapy, various radiation treatments, and surgery, etc, while in my mind I was already exploring other alternatives.

Dr. Zink said there was no immediate action that needed to be taken and put me on a process he termed Active Surveillance. We scheduled another PSA test for 6 weeks out. He also recommended I have another Prostate Biopsy in 6 months and pending those results, another again a year from that one. I am weighing the risks and considering all options regarding scheduling these possible future biopsies.

With diagnosis in hand I went back to the Internet looking for answers. My research led me to Paul Reilly, ND at Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center in Renton WA, who co-authored along with Dr. Michael T. Murray the book: How to Prevent and Treat Cancer with Natural Medicine, published by Riverhead Books. This is a remarkable book and a must read for anyone diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. From that book and other studies I began my treatment.

I also returned to Bastyr Center for Natural Health to explore other ways to improve my own immune system for natural healing. Their treatment has already improved my physical well being and their methods will be discussed here.

6) The Dreaded Prostate Biopsy

Both my wife and I met with Dr. Zink at Group Health to discuss options regarding potential Prostate Cancer. Regardless of how you feel about it, this is not something you want to hide from your family, or try to bull your way through on you own. Allowing your loved ones to be part of the process is a good thing, and will lead to a much faster healing along with an improved quality of life.

From the start Dr. Zink told us he had performed over 1,000 Prostate Biopsies over the years. He could only think of two infections as a result of his Biopsies, which was much lower than the National Average for Prostate Biopsy Complications. Because of his success rate, he was reluctant to change his protocol at this point and would stick with the Cipro to prevent Prostate Biopsy Infections.

I told him I was a wimp when it came to medical procedures and very worried about the pain during the process. I’m the type of person who can hit my hand with a hammer, then use duct tape and a paper towel to stop the bleeding and keep on working. But when it comes to even small little needles and someone else poking around, I just might pass out. He said there was no way to avoid needles. He would be using a local lidocaine for a periprostatic block at the time of the procedure and he would prescribe an oral sedative as long as I had some to drive afterwards.

I asked Dr. Zink about taking Pectasol-C and Tagamet prior to, and after a Biopsy. He said he had never seen a paper that shows a Biopsy could Spread Prostate Cancer and he would not recommend the Tagamet. He did not have an opinion regarding the Pectasol-C. Yes, I did keep taking the Pectasol-C! In fact, I upped the dose around the time of the Prostate Biopsy. Nor did he have an opinion of any supplements to take before the procedure. I wrote this off as the standard medical response from someone in his profession. With all the malpractice, insurance issues, and internal regulations of a large medical operation such as Group Health, there just isn’t the time or inclination for doctors to explore other options no matter how good they may be. Let’s face it, Dr. Zink may be really good at what he does, but he totally resides within his narrow line of expertise. To expect him to reach beyond that standard norm, is asking way too much for medicine in America today. (Later in this Blog I will be sharing the options I have personally chosen for my own alternative healing, Releasing the Prostate Cancer.

Based on Dr. Zink’s Biopsy results, and with a desire to see if there actually was a serious problem, we decided to go ahead with the process. The first thing I did was to call Group Health to acquire an 'Estimate' on their costs for the procedure as I am on a high deductible insurance plan. A few days later I called again for another estimate. (More on this to follow)

At Dr. Zink’s request for 10 days before the Prostate Biopsy I abstained from aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), fish oil, Vitamin E, clopidogrel (Plavix), aggrenox, and any other blood thinners. There is some bleeding with this procedure and there is no sense creating further risk. Dr. Zink also prescribed a single diazepam just before the procedure as a sedative/relaxer, and of course there was the enema and cipro for me to take at home before I came into his office for the biopsy.

My wife and I walked into his office about 20 minutes early for my appointment. Were both nervous, but I was beginning to feel the diazepam and becoming increasingly calm. When call back we were told that we both could come. Surprise. My wife was there with a direct view of the entire procedure. Of course for the most part she had seen most of it before. In her own words this is her experience:

When Steve made his appointment for the biopsy I knew that I would go with him. He decided to get some medicine to relax before the procedure. I thought it a good idea.

When we arrived at the Doctor’s office he checked in, got the usual weigh in, blood pressure etc and then he took a pill to relax. Wish I had some for me.

After 20 minutes or so the nurse said we ‘both’ could go into the Room and gave instructions on how to prepare for the Biopsy. I was surprised when they said I could accompany Steve. Ohhhhkay…I didn’t expect that, and didn’t quite know quite what to expect… but I was all for it.

Dr. Zink explained exactly what he was going to do. He had the ultrasound machine right at his side. As the nurse and Doc got ready for the procedure I was surprised… no ‘shocked’ at the Length of the Needles that were used. Oh my God - - these things are long, and looked wickedly sharp.

He first put the Probe up Steve’s ass and I could see the picture of his prostate. This was actually very interesting. The doctor explained what I was looking at, the size, the placement and so on. Never having seen a prostate up close and personal - - it was really cool.

The first needle that went in I could feel my body tighten and get uncomfortable. As I saw that Steve didn’t seem to feel it and couldn’t see a thing. I got more relaxed and just viewed the process.

The nurse and doctor were precise, methodical, careful and continually checked in with Steve as to how he was doing. That put me at ease.

The entire procedure of getting out all the samples was done in maybe 15 minutes. After waiting another 10 minutes or so to make sure Steve was okay, we were on our way.

I was glad to be there for support and getting information but don’t look forward to another Biopsy if Steve chooses to have one.

My experience of the Prostate Biopsy was a bit different. I lay on my left side with my but hanging out over the medical table facing Dr. Zink and my wife. It was a reasonable comfortable position. Insertion of the ultrasound probe was a bit uncomfortable but not a problem. Then came the lidocaine. It was done in several shots and stung like the dickens, not unlike a strong bee sting for a short time, then drifted away. Dr. Zink was very good about asking how I was doing throughout the process. When it was time for to take the Prostate samples, I could feel the process of the needle going in, and hear the sound of the spring loaded mechanism taking the sample, but there was no, or very, very, little pain. In all the Prostate Biopsy was uncomfortable but not unreasonable.

When I got home I lay down and rested for a short time. Dr. Zink had warned me about blood in my urine and sure enough there was some. By the second day the reddish urine ting was passing, and thankfully with the help of the Cipro I did not experience any infection. Generally for the next week I consciously moved slower than usual, did not lift anything heavy, and just focused on healing my body. The results arrived 5 days after the Prostate Biopsy. Sure enough I had Prostate Cancer in three areas. Bummmmer!! The good news was that it was ‘Slow Growing’.

5) Decision for the Prostate Biopsy Step Two

Along with the Allergy testing at Bastyr Center for Natural Health several other lab tests including Blood Panel, Lipid Study, Thyroid Test, CRP - Cardiac/Enzyme Marker Inflammatory Test, and new PSA Total and Percent Free tests were ordered and processed. The testing was done through Pacific Physician’s Laboratory, Inc. In addition, as a direct result of my discussions with Dr. Jones and Students at Bastyr, I decided to seek out another ‘medical’ opinion regarding future Prostate Biopsy should one be needed.

Still disappointed with the quality of service I had been receiving at Group Health, I made an appointment at Urology Northwest after a thorough Internet search. They appeared to have some of the best recommendations. My appointment was pretty standard for a Prostate exam. We discussed past test results and chatted about possible Prostate Cancer Treatment. The doctor performed a DRE and ran a Urine Analysis to check for any infection. Based on my Prostate history and lack of urinary infection, the doctor recommended I have a Prostate Biopsy. He was ready to do one at his office in a matter of days. I left with the very words I didn’t want to hear echoing in my ears.

About this time the lab results from my Bastyr tests came in. Medically I was sound. Everything looked good with the exception of my PSA tests. My PSA Total came in at 6.83, a substantial increase. My PSA Free came in at 13%, again another slide in the wrong direction. Both of these were a shock to me because I'd experienced much better results directly after the cessation of the Cipro. This was not good news. As mentioned before, the specter of Prostate Cancer can be a really scary thing. The unknown possibility can be even worse than the known quantity. At least if you are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, you can decide on a form of treatment and move on with your life. With these latest results my wife began lobbying for a Biopsy just to get the question answered. Of course she was hoping for good results.

I began to toy with the idea of having a Prostate Biopsy. Sure there was risk but I reasoned certain physicians and facilities may present less risk than others. It also appears Prostate Biopsies can be uncomfortable to very painful. I found that some doctors use a surface acting anesthetic first on the rectum wall, and then a needle anesthetic to numb the prostate. Some doctors do not. While the anesthetic appears not 100% effective, the studies seem indicate it may reduce the pain of the procedure by an average of 30-40%. In some other settings doctors are even using a general anesthetic, knocking the patient out prior to the procedure. Then there was the risk of spreading of any potential Prostate Cancer cells as a direct result of the Biopsy. I was already taking Pectasol-C to prevent this from happening. Additional studies indicated taking Cimetidine (Tagamet at 800 mg daily) may modulate the body’s immune response (immunomodulation), interfere with tumor growth, and inhibit tumor cell migration and metastasis. I was wondering about this as an additional option, but didn’t want to damage my ability to absorb healing nutrients.

I started to make a list of pre-Biopsy questions to refine my search for a Prostate Biopsy physician. They included:
Question 1: What is the number of prostate biopsies you have performed, and what is the number of cases you have had where there have been serious antibiotic resistant infections as a result of the procedure?
Question 2: Is Cipro the only antibiotic you use prior to, and/or after the biopsy?
Question 3: Have you read about Dr. Schaeffer’s new protocol at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, of targeted antimicrobial prophylaxis that has significantly cut the incidence of prostate biopsy infections?
Question 4: What processes(s) do you use for pain management during, the procedure?
Question 5: Is it acceptable for me to be taking Pectasol-C and/or Tagamet prior to, and after a Biopsy?
Question 6: Are there any other ‘supplements’ I should consider taking, or not taking, before, during, or after a Prostate Biopsy?

Then too, should a Biopsy find I have Prostate Cancer what would be my next step(s)? I began this process by looking at all the standard forms of treatment currently available. Then I sought out alternative forms of treatment. My research led me to one conclusion. Should I have Prostate Cancer that needed some form of ‘radical treatment’, the da Vinci® Robotic-Assisted Prostatectomy is the only form of treatment I would accept. This form of treatment appears to have significantly better long-term results when compared to Open or General Laparoscopic Surgery and Radiation Therapy. (More on this to follow) With this conclusion, I decided to keep my search of potential Prostate Biopsy physicians to those qualified with, and having local access to, the da Vinci® method of treatment. Lo and Behold, this led me back to Group Health, and I made an appointment for a Prostate Biopsy 'discussion' with Dr. Jerome Zink in Seattle.
